Following the unimpressive performance of the Super Eagles at the ongoing 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, former president of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria (CFN) Rev (Dr.) Moses IIoh has told critics not to blame Lars Lagerback for the team’s woes as he blamed players for lack of commitment and patriotism.
Nigeria last Monday drew 2-2 with South Korea at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban and were eliminated from the World Cup after placing last in Group B.
Rev IIoh said the former Sweden coach with the limited time he had did his best for the team.
In a chat with Saturday Vanguard sports, Rev Iloh said the team’s behaviour at the World Cup was awful, describing it as a normal Nigerian character where there is no atom of patriotism . He said that the team failed to realized their mission in South Africa.
“The situation is very bad especially at this stage. They lacked commitment and a fighting spirt. They were super when they played Argentina but in subsequent games it was bad. They went and relaxed forgetting their mission in South Africa,†Rev. IIoh said.
“It is so unfortunate that we did not bring a winning team, because if we did you would see the fighting spirit in them. For instance you could see how the Ivorians played despite the fact that they were three goals down, they still fought hard until Drogba was able to score one,†he said.
However, he said that the Nigeria Football Association, NFA should be disbanded for a new body that have the zeal and interest in the country’s football.
“I think the NFA has bitten more than they should, they should retire and then we bring a new body that will make sure our sport is in good shape. For the present Board it is bad news,â€Â he concluded.
