Students of Federal University of Technology Owerri, FUTO, have decried the N12,500 surcharge fee demanded by the school authorities before the commencement of 2016/2017 academic session.

According to information on FUTO’ website, resumption will be from Monday May 8 to 15.

It added: “Students will be allowed into the campus only after proper clearance on presentation of the following: evidence of payment of approved fees in addition to damages surcharge of N12,500 per student;

“Notarised undertaking to be of good behaviour, bearing student’s passport photograph, signed by the student and witnessed by the parent.”

Some students, who spoke to Vanguard on condition of anonymity, said the requirements were too stringent.

One said: “This is all punishment for the protest over the hike in fees. But those of us who did not participate in the protest are being punished, too.”
