ABUJA- A civil society organisation, Global Amnesty Watch, GAW, has accused Amnesty International, AI, of moves to destabilise Nigeria’s socio-political life and pursuing sick obsession and defense of killer groups like the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, and Boko Haram with its recent reports on human rights violation in the country.

This was stated Thursday at a world press conference held in Abuja by the organisation, where the National Coordinator, Philip Agbese, said some big countries were using international organisations like AI to undermine the territorial integrity, sovereignty and national laws of host countries with the intention to destabilise stable countries instead of fighting all forms of terrorism in that country.

Agbese also alleged that AI has issued several reports built on falsehood and capable of creating disaffection, hate and disunity aimed at destabilising the country, which also will be detrimental to the peaceful co-existence.

He described the reports of AI as misleading and dangerous activities that could negate national development and harmony based on GAW’s own investigations, and stated that even in international law there are limits to exercise some freedom status based on sensitive issues and unfounded reports.

He said: “There have been concerted efforts to undermine the integrity of Nigeria using diverse means and platforms. Some of these tricks are so well managed that some of us innocently applaud them by thinking they are in our national interest. The reverse is however the case.

“The Global Amnesty Watch, GAW, an organisation that is not biased but out to address the use of international NGOs by some big countries to undermine their territorial integrity, sovereignty and national laws of that country, is rightly concerned that the plots to destabilise otherwise stable countries is gathering pace instead of slowing down in the face of global outrage over the damage being done.

“We therefore unequivocally state that the AI report is biased, unprofessional, lacks merit and does not reflect the realities on ground. In due course GAW shall unveil its own report for the world to know the truth and therefore the current report by AI should be discarded by Nigerians and every other right thinking citizens of the world.

“In this country the plot manifests in the form of an international NGO, Amnesty International, AI. As you would have noted in the past, this entity has issued several reports that openly lie against Nigeria, its government and critical institution, apparently with the sole intent of undermining them.

“There have been instances in the past where the ability of Nigerian troops to adequately respond to terror threats and incidents was significantly compromised because of the activities of this organisation.

“Amnesty international has taken the ridiculous to a new low this week with the release of a report in which it openly sided with terrorists, insurgents, separatists and fifth columnists while treating Nigerians as the enemies.

As it has been the case in the past, while it may have other motives in other countries, the intention in Nigeria is to blackmail military and security institutions into not being able to discharge their statutory duties.”

According to him AI has been pursuing a sick obsession of defending killer groups like the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, and Boko Haram with their reports against the military.

GAW also alleged that AI has failed to recognise the current threats the nation and its citizenry face under Boko Haram’s campaign of terror and horror, as they have not taken steps to stop the bloody group by engaging them to lay down their arms and stop their activities.

“AI may argue that it is working to ensure that state actors and non-state actors are held accountable for human rights related issues, it must know that globalisation does not mean lawlessness.

Nigeria is a democracy and the country operates on the rule of law. With the previous report, is against rule of law where Nigeria, a sovereign state is concerned”, he stated.
