Maiduguri—No fewer than 60,000 persons have been registered for the National Identity Cards in Borno this year, despite security challenge.

Recalled that the office in the state was closed down due to activities of insurgents, only to be reopened for operation in January this year.

Coordinator, National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, Borno State office, Zaman Yaksha, told Vanguard that the 60,000 that enrolled so far were captured between January and November amid security challenges.

He said: “We have so far registered 60,000 people in Borno for the national identity cards. The National Identity Management Commission targets seven million people across states in the country.

“We started enrolment since January 2016 with lots of challenges, especially inadequate funding.

‘’We don’t have offices in all the local government areas as expected, so this makes the registration centre in Maiduguri overwhelmed with people.”

He said the NIMC currently had four offices in Gubio, headquarters of Gubio Local Government; Biu, headquarters of Biu Local Government; University of Maiduguri and Sir Kashim Ibrahim College of Education in Maiduguri.
