ABUJA—President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, to investigate allegation of sexual abuse in Internally Displaced Camps, IDPs, across the country.
He also directed governors in whose states the camps were located to immediately commence investigations into the matter.
The President’s directive came on the heels of a report recently “released by Human Rights Watch, HRW, which alleged sexual abuse and exploitation of women and girls displaced by Boko Haram insurgency.
According to a statement by presidential spokesman, Mallam Garba Shehu, yesterday in Abuja, “President Buhari is worried and shocked” by the report.
The statement read: “The welfare of these most vulnerable of Nigerian citizens has been a priority of his government.
‘’Nigerians and the international community can be rest assured that the allegations raised in the HRW report are not being taken lightly.
“President Buhari has instructed the Inspector General of Police and the state governors of the affected states to immediately commence investigations into the issue.
