Scores of residents of Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State stormed the state assembly recently over the alleged demolition of over 13 communities in the area by some alleged land grabbers.

The residents wielded placards some of which read; “Justice Must Be Done,” “Task Force On Land Grabbers Is A Toothless Bulldog, Save Our Soul From Land Grabbers,” amongst others.

Some of the affected communities include Opo Olomi, Oluwo Opo Olomi, Itapampa, Adeoba Oniponpo, Adeba Ajagunna, Oko Ile, Alabula, Seriki Alabula, Alaga and others.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Mr. Tunde Popoola said the land grabbers went to these areas with tractors and lorries, chasing away the residents from the area and beat some of them to stupor adding that, almost all the houses in the area, which covers over 1,500 hectares, have been destroyed as debris of the demolition were loaded into trucks and taken to unknown places.

“We want the Lagos State Government to come to our aid because this is the ancestral home of these people. Owoeye is not bigger than the rule of law. The forefathers of the displaced residents found the communities with the whole area measuring about 1,561 hectares,” he said. Addressing the protesters later, the Speaker of the House, Mr. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa promised that the House would work on the petition and ensure that justice is done.
