Dutse—As Jigawa State House of Assembly, yesterday, extended the tenure of the sole administrators of the state’s 27 local government caretaker committee by six months, the cold war between the two main political parties in the state may take another dimension.

Though the leadership of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has not made official statement on the decision, there are strong indications that the party may take legal action to nullify the House’s decision.

Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Alhaji Idris Garba, approved a bill to amend the 2015 Local Government Administration Law at plenary, which allowed caretaker committee chairmen of local government councils to remain in office for six more months.

The motion for the extension was moved by Deputy Chief Whip, Bala Hamza Gada, and  supported by majority of members in the House.

All Progressives Congress, APC, member, Aminu Sankara, seconded the motion, explaining that the need to extend the caretakers’ tenure was necessary because the state could not fund local government election with the current economic situation.

Meanwhile, a PDP  insider told Vanguard that the party  would kick against the move as it had been awaiting the state independent electoral commission to declare a new date for the election as the time given to the caretaker chairmen expired this month.
