ONITSHA—A coalition of human rights organisations based in South-East region, SBCHROs, has called on the leaders of the United Nations, UN, the European Union, EU, the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS and other developed countries, who have advanced in democracy, to mount pressure on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to fix new dates for the re-run of the six vacant senatorial seats in the region.

The vacant seats are those of Owerri North (Okigwe) senatorial district, Imo State; Anambra Central senatorial district, Anambra State; Rivers West; Rivers South-East and Rivers East senatorial districts in Rivers State and the Kogi East senatorial district in Kogi State.

The coalition also wants the world leaders to do same for the re-run of the nine vacant House of Representatives seats in Rivers State, adding that the said polls should be conducted and concluded inexcusably.

In a statement issued yesterday in Onitsha, Anambra State, the coalition said it was also the constitutional duty of INEC and the security agencies in the country and not the voting populace, to provide security and ensure absence of violence during such polls.
