CALABAR—A confrontation between policemen and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil and Defence Corps, NSCDC, at a check point in Calabar, Wednesday night, led to the death of an NSCDC personnel after he was allegedly shot by one of the policeman.
Trouble , according to a source at the NSCDC’s office, started after the policemen mounted a check point close to the gate of NSCDC located at New Airport Road. When NSCDC personnel who were returning from a duty at about 7 .45 pm met the policemen .
It was alleged that the policemen ordered NSCDC officers not to come out of operational van. But one them allegedly came down from the van to explain to the policemen that they were NSCDC personnel, and was allegedly shot dead on the spot before he could explain anything.
Mr. Eremi Solomon, the NSCDC Public Relations Officer for Cross River State Command, confirmed the incident and said investigations had begun to ascertain what happened between the policemen and the NSCDC personnel that led to the killing.
He said the Inspector General of Police and the Cross River State Commissioner had been informed of the incident
According to him, the policemen had been mounting check-points in front of their gate for some time and several appeals to them to change the location of the check-point since NSCDC was a sister security agency fell on deaf ears.
“The New Airport Road where our office is located is a long stretch and we have been appealing to them to move the check- point at the gate of a sister security agency to a convenient point, but they seem to be unwilling to do so. We have written series of letters to the police authorities to appeal for the check point to be taken to another place on the road.”
The Cross River State Police Command spokesman, John Eluu said the police were unaware of the incident but would carry out investigation to ascertain what really took place
