Safety Advocacy and Empowerment Foundation has said that the recent safety-related incidents which led to loss of lives and property across the country were preventable through adherence to proper corporate safety processes, enhanced government regulations and enforcement.

Shamusideen Kadiri, who spoke for the group, in collaboration with other safety organisations, noted that aggressive safety advocacy were the required panacea to check the terrible trend.

He said: “We commiserate with the families of victims of the numerous incidents as we seek an end to these unfortunate events that have been a drain not only on the country’s scarce resources, but the premature termination of the lives and subsequent depletion of the nation’s skilled and productive labour force.

“It is always disheartening whenever we hear of unfortunate events (which could have been proactively managed) such as we have experienced all around the country over the past year amongst which was the accidental release of chlorine gas in the state waterworks in Jos, Plateau State which resulted in the tragic loss of 10 lives with almost 100 hospitalised.”
