The Coalition in Defence of Nigerian Democracy and Constitution, has urged Ekiti state government to take legal action against the The State Security Service (SSS), also known as the Department of State Services (DSS), following the alleged invasion of the Ekiti House of Assembly and subsequent abduction of some Lawmakers in it hallowed chamber.

The convener of the pro-democracy group, Ariyo-Dare Atoye, opined that such action is needed to preserve democacray and ensure that no institution of government is above the law.

“The illegality of the recent invasion of Ekiti House of Assembly and subsequent abduction of some Lawmakers in it hallowed chamber should be vigorously tested in a court of law including filing for damages in the interest of the battered lawmaker who was later dumped in an hospital after 18 days of serial abuse. The Ekiti matter must be pursued in the court of law as a service to democracy in the interest of social justice and preservation of the constitution. And just one day, this gross abuse of rule of law will be overcome”, the activist noted in a statement on behalf of the group.

The group called on Nigerians to defend our democracy and the rule of law against executive abuse, assault and rascality

“The State abduction of the lawmakers could ingloriously fast-track the total derailment of our democracy. We can not afford to gravitate towards State-Sponsored terror against the citizens. The Ekiti saga is reminiscent of the 1984 foiled abduction of Umaru Dikko in the United Kingdom. Democracy is now in a present danger in Nigeria”.

“As a service to this nation, we are going to stand with likeminded democrats and patriots to defend our democracy and the rule of law against executive abuse, assault and rascality. We are calling on all concerned Nigerians to stand up and defend a democratic system that some selfless Nigerians worked tirelessly to birth including paying the ultimate sacrifice”.

“We will be doing Mr. President a great favour by taking lawful actions to stop him from undermining democratic institutions and subverting the rule of law. As a former military ruler, the tendency to be dictatorial is always there. We must therefore help him to become a democrat in truth and action by exposing his anti-democratic tendencies and moves”.
