Managing Director of Spectranet, Mr David Venn has said that consumers all over the world, including Nigeria, are increasingly embracing the Internet as the next revolution in gaining access to information and entertainment. Explaining while unveiling new logo of the company recently,Venn said that most people use the internet to deepen social relationships; as an alternative to traditional means of communication and or directly making their voice heard in public debates.

“For instance, in Nigeria, customers use our services not only to access their emails and browse the Internet, but also to communicate via Facebook,Twitter and Skype, to watch videos on YouTube, play multi-player games across the world or to watch full feature movies. Families are using broadband service to do this every day and the Internet is fast becoming an essential part of modern family life”.

He provided another example with the recent Nigerian general elections, saying “We were all witnesses to the impact that the Internet played. For Nigeria it heralded a new era in information dissemination and engagement process as well as advertising. The 2015 elections proved, without doubt, that social media can no longer be excluded from political campaigns.

Live updates from the electoral fields were also reported from eyewitness accounts. Nigerians across the globe glued to online TV to gain access to up-to-the-minute information.

“On March 28th, for example, Channels TV had more than 10,000 viewers watching the presidential election live via internet streaming. Internet has become part of our lifestyle in Nigeria and we can see its impact felt in almost every facet of our lives. The individual is now a major player in the happenings around him, powered by Information Communication Technology”.
