REC frustrating our move to tribunal – Rivers APC

By Jimitota Onoyume & Davies Iheamnachor

PORT HARCOURT—THE All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State has accused the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dame Gesila Khan, of frustrating its move to challenge the election results at the tribunal.

The party, in a chat with journalists in the state, said that its efforts to get the documents used in the conduct of the elections to enable it move to the tribunal had always proved abortive.

The state Chairman of APC, Mr. David Ikanya, said that all applications by the party to access and obtain 16 documents from the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in the state were turned down, adding that it was a ploy by the REC and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to stop the party from going to the tribunal.

Ikanya said: “The injustice by INEC in the state against the APC is becoming alarming. On April 14, we applied for the release of all the relevant documents about the elections. We requested for 16 documents ranging from the result sheets to the set qualifications for engaging ad-hoc staff for the job. Till date, we have received only half of one of the items.

“This delay portends that these documents were not ready as at the time the results were announced. Following our persistent petitions, they agreed to give us the documents on April 27 but we were denied the documents again.

“The REC is determined to frustrate our petition at the tribunal. They want to prevent us from approaching the tribunal. It also justifies our earlier call that there was no election in the state.”
