Enugu—An outbreak of cholera has occurred in Enugu State, leaving several people hospitalized in Nsukka, Udenu and Igboeze South Local Government areas of the state.

Although no life had been reportedly lost, efforts had been intensified by the state government to ensure it does not escalate
Commissioner for Health, Dr. George Eze, visited the affected patients in the various hospitals on Saturday and donated drugs worth over N500,000 to be administered free of charge.

Eze led a team of health workers from his ministry and representatives of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, UNICEF, and World Health Organisation, WHO, to assess the extent of the disease, to the hospitals.

At Bishop Shenaham Specialist Hospital, Nsukka, Reverend Josephat Odoh, who represented the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, said: “We have as many as 12 cases admitted in a day, though the situation has improved.”

Dr. Eze said his visit to the three affected hospitals confirmed that Governor Sullivan Chime was passionate about healthcare delivery in the state and had directed that the drugs should be administered free of charge to the patients.

He said: “As I donate these drugs on behalf of the governor, Sullivan Chime, I urge you to do more.
“I appreciate the way you have managed the disease; it shows that the state will be at peace whenever something similar occurs in these three councils.”
