Yenagoa—Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, has confirmed the appointment of Professor Humphrey Ogoni as Vice Chancellor of the state owned Niger Delta University at Amassoma in Wilberforce Island.
Professor Ogoni was until his elevation the acting Vice Chancellor of the university from 2012.
The appointment, according to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, takes immediate effect.
This has put to rest the several months of agitation by students and staff of the institution for the ratification of Prof. Ogoni’s appointment as the substantive Vice Chancellor of the university.
Meanwhile, an umbrella group of Alumni students and students of the institution, Bayelsa Academic Salvage Forum, has commended the state governor for the prompt and unbias assessment of candidates for the position of the Vice Chancellor leading to the confirmation of Prof Ogoni as substantive Vice Chancellor of the institution.
Chairman of the group, Dr. Ayibatari Johnson, said though the delay in the appointment created tension in the institution, the confirmation of Prof. Ogoni’s appointment was a welcome development.
