Four Senior School Students, of the science department, Federal Government College, Ijanikin Lagos, were the cynosure of all eyes at the just concluded second National Education Innovation exhibition that took place in Abuja recently with their brilliant and innovative sound activated switch and Automatic Street light.
The four student team, which comprised of Idowu Gabriel Senapon, Nwankwoh Okwuchukwu Ebuka, Ogunngbe Ebenezer Semako and Nonye-Peters Jeremiah, invented a sound activated switch and an automatic Street light, to make life easy for Nigerians.
According to Idowu Gabriel Senapon, the project team leader, “the importance of the sound activated switch is to enable home appliances to be put on or off, with a simple snap or clap, while the automatic street light is to help conserve the use of light, hence addressing huge energy and manpower wastage. The main aim of this project, the street light and sound activated switch is to eradicate the use of manual switches”.
After proper research, the team worked together for two weeks under the supervision of their teacher Mr. Sam Enieto to invent both devices.
Stating how the device was invented, Nonye-Peters Jeremiah explained that “my fellow students and I discovered via research that the light dependable resistor (LDR) works with darkness, the darker an environment the better the light. So we used this discovery to invent the automatic street light, which comes up by itself when the environment is dark”.
“For the sound activated switch, we came up with the temistor which is used to convert heat energy to light energy, and sound into waves. We observed the use of microphones, how it operates, and how it converts sound energy to electrical energy” he added.
Reiterating, how the devices work, Nwankwoh Okwuchukwu Ebuka, notes that “the device works within a bandwidth of three to five meters, just with a snap of the fingers, appliances come alive. Our invention can power 240 volts appliances, like: TV set, air conditioner, radio, bulb, refrigerators, microwaves. The automatic street light is very good because it can be used for security light and street light”.
Ogunngbe Ebenezer Semako explained that though, the project which was inspired by the need to make life easy for people using technology, especially for physically challenged persons is very cost efficient.
Celebrating these outstanding performance, Mrs. A.A. Ibukun-Oyewole Principal Federal College Ijanikin, commended the students for making the school proud.
