The Chairman, Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Nsukka urban, Chief Anthony Ozo- Onwuemelie spoke on the security situation in Nsukka.
Criminal activities, kidnap, robbery etc.
Well, I can not say that the police are not working, they are over working because the population of Nsukka is very large and creating problems. It is not what one person can handle. I can give credit to Nsukka people because the way they co-operate with police is encouraging and should be appreciated.
The assistance people give to police public relations committee (PCRC) building project at Nsukka Urban shows that people have realized that security is not one man business. The PCRC has been assisting the police and I am urging philanthropists, cooperate bodies and individuals to offer olive branches to the Nigerian Police Force to enable them discharge their onerous duty of protecting life and property.
I would suggest that the Nigeria Police Force should organize a security awareness seminar throughout the nation, not just in Nsukka, draw speakers from the length and breath of the country and beyond to enlighten people on the merits and demerits of fortified security network.
The security awareness seminar should involve PCRC, vigilant group, neighborhood watch, the clergies local government chairman as stakeholders. The figures of policemen in the country particularly in the university town of Nsukka are inadequate to guarantee the expected security network. There should be sensitization so that every body would be involved in policing than living it entirely for uniform men alone.
Creation of Two New Divisions in Nsukka.
Enugu State Commissioner of Police should talk better on this. The police manpower in Nsukka is not points to guarantee adequate security. The divisional police officers since the establishment of the division did their best in crime prevention and detection but among the retinue of the officers, late ACP Andrew Nosa Uyiekpen left a towering legacy in Nsukka as DPO and later Area Commander respectively.
His track record since the history of policing in the division has not being equaled by both retired and serving ones. The incumbent Area Commander ACP Ros-Arrnson Halladu and DPO Nwokolo are doing their very best as they respond to distress calls timely, no matter the hour of the day.
Nsukka has been blessed with good police officers with human face and mind. One cannot forget the tireless efforts of retired ACP Opoola Taiwo as Area Commander, CSP Eriofoloh Mark, late ACP Dangana, late DPO Joseph Ejitagha who was shot dead by robbers on operation and DPO Ike Mbah among others.
The worst of the officers was DPO Gambo who was alleged to have killed two innocent Nsukka secondary school students of Nsukka high school. Nonetheless, federal government should as a matter urgency and necessity, increase the numerical strength of the Nigeria police to stand the test of time.
