BY TONY EDIKE
ENUGU — THE police in Enugu, yesterday, announced the rescue of a 79-year-old woman, Mrs. Theresa Udeji, who was allegedly kidnapped since December 13.

A member of the gang that kidnapped the woman was arrested by the police during the rescue operation.

Mrs. Udeji was abducted by gunmen in Agwu and was reportedly taken to an unknown destination.

According to a statement by the state police spokesman, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, yesterday, ”following the development, operatives of the anti-kidnapping unit of the Enugu State Command began their trail which incidentally paid off on January 31, 2013 when she was successfully rescued in an uncompleted building around Nara axis of Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State by the operatives without payment of ransom.”

He said the victim had been re-united with her family.

According to Amaraizu, a suspect who gave his name as Ozoemena Mbah of Onuorie Nara had been arrested and he is currently helping the police in their investigation just as investigations are ongoing.

He applauded members of the public particularly men of the Neighbourhood Watch of Nara community for their support and partnership which led to the successful rescue of the victim and the arrest of the suspect.

The state police commissioner, Mr. Musa Daura, has, however, assured that the command would continue to partner all relevant stake holders in the security business in order to send crime and criminality to the abyss “since security is everybody’s responsibility.”

He also thanked his men for the feat and charged them to maintain the tempo in the war against crime and criminality.
