ABUJA — The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, said yesterday that the flood that ravaged parts of the country killed no fewer than 363 persons and created 2.1 million internally displaced persons (IDPs).

This came as Secretary of Kogi State Emergency Management Agency, Mrs. Alice Ogedengbe, raised an alarm, alleging influx of fake flood victims into the relief camps set up for victims.

NEMA said in a statement by Head, Public Relations, Yushau Shuaib, that the casualty figure of 363 deaths was only a provisional one.

The statement said a report from the Emergency Situation Room of the agency indicated that a total of 7,705,398 persons were affected by the flood between July 1, 2012, and October 31, 2012.

It read:  “Of the affected population, 2,157,419 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) were registered across the affected states.

“The figure also indicates that 363 persons died while 18,282 people were treated for injuries they sustained during the flooding.

“While Adamawa and Kogi States recorded higher figures of casualties, 256 local government councils throughout the federation were adversely affected.

Meanwhile, Secretary of the Kogi Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mrs Alice Ogedengbe, has cried out, alleging influx of fake flood victims into the relief camps.

Ogedengbe raised the alarm in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lokoja, yesterday.

She said that the agency was grappling with the challenges of people parading themselves as victims of flood, while they were not.

The secretary alleged that the people had been claiming relief materials and still blackmailing the state government for not taking care of its flood victims.

Ogedengbe said that the state government would soon fish out those parading themselves as victims of flood.

She advised people who were not affected by the flood, to be law abiding, and work with the government to ensure adequate distribution of relief materials to victims.

“I can assure you that the state government will do everything possible to bring perpetrators to book,” she assured.
