Two armed robbers shot dead in Delta

AT least two armed robbers were Thursday night shot dead by the Police in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area, Delta State.

The robbers, Saturday Vanguard gathered have been terrorizing the town and its environ. A dependable source said the notorious robbers were killed during a shootout with the police.

The source, who pleaded anonymity, said the robbery gang was intercepted by the police, while trying to rob unsuspecting students of the State Polytechnic, Ozoro in one of the popular Hostels near the campus at about 10pm, adding that the police acted on a tip-off.

According to the source, “a call was put forward to the Police as soon as the notorious gang brandishing dangerous weapons entered the first room in the hostel. On noticing that Police were around, the gang ran out of the hostel opening fire indiscriminately while trying to escape.

“We heard several gun shots and after a while we came out to meet two of the armed robbers lying dead on the ground. We were very happy and commended the effort of the Police.”

As at the time of filing this report, residents of the area, mostly students were seen trooping to the Ozoro police station to catch glimpse of the dead robbers. Effort made to reach the Divisional Police Officer for comment proved abortive. However, a senior police officer in the division said the “two armed robbers were killed during a cross fire with our men and two cut to size guns and a small wooden pistol were recovered from them.”

Meanwhile, suspected cult group on Wednesday night murdered a young man believed to be a member of a rival cult group at Orhuwhorun Junction, Ovwian, Udu Local Government Area, Delta state.

Our correspondent reliably gathered that the cult members numbering over 30 stormed the kiosk belonging to the deceased mother at Orhuwhorun Junction at about 9:00 pm. The source added that the cult members stormed the kiosk in a commando style carrying locally made guns, broken bottles, sticks, cutlasses and other weapons.

“On sighting the boy, the rampaging cult members descended on him clubbing him to death before he could get help,” the source said. Leader of the Ovwian Local Vigilante group, Mr. David Ukiri, who spoke to newsmen said they have arrested three persons in connection with the killing of the young man.

He said the three suspects have been handed over to the police at Ovwian-Aladja police station, adding that the deceased has been deposited in a nearby morgue. The police could not be reached for comment as at press time.
