How numbers are changing football: Olamiji explains data’s growing influence

By Esther Onyegbula

As data analytics continues to reshape global football, a Nigerian sports analyst and entrepreneur, Mr. Olamiji Itunu Osifeso, has projected that predictive intelligence and data-driven decision-making will play a defining role in determining outcomes at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Olamiji, Chief Executive Officer of CRSPREDICTIONS, a sports analysis platform, said the growing influence of analytics in football is transforming how teams prepare, how fans engage with the game and how performance is evaluated at the highest level.

Speaking against the backdrop of the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, Olamiji noted that modern football has evolved beyond talent and intuition, with clubs, coaches and analysts increasingly relying on statistics, performance metrics and predictive models to gain competitive advantages.

According to him, football is no longer driven solely by passion and instinct but by a deeper understanding of patterns, trends and data interpretation.

“Football analysis is not simply about predicting outcomes or supporting favourite teams. It is about identifying patterns, interpreting numbers and applying logic to understand a game that continues to evolve,” he said.

Olamiji, who has a background in Computer and Mathematical Sciences, represents a growing number of Nigerian professionals leveraging technology and analytics to contribute to sports development.

His interest in sports analytics emerged after years of entrepreneurial experience in other sectors. Before venturing into football data analysis, he was involved in automobile importation and also partnered in a fashion business located in the Mandilas commercial district of Lagos Island.
He said those experiences helped him develop business management skills and the resilience required to build sustainable ventures.

In 2022, he shifted focus to sports analytics, combining his passion for football with his academic background. The following year, he launched the CRSPREDICTIONS website, a platform designed to provide football enthusiasts with data-driven insights, statistics and informed analysis.

Despite building a sports analytics brand, Olamiji has continued his corporate career and currently works as an Administrative Officer in a petroleum and engineering company, balancing professional responsibilities with his growing influence in sports analysis.

He observed that the global football industry has witnessed a significant shift towards evidence-based decision-making, with clubs and national teams investing heavily in performance data, player tracking systems and advanced statistical models.

According to him, coaches now analyse opponents using detailed performance metrics, recruitment teams assess players through data-backed evaluations, while broadcasters increasingly utilise real-time statistics to enhance audience engagement.

“The modern game rewards preparation, adaptability and informed decision-making. Success is no longer determined solely by reputation or individual brilliance. The ability to interpret information effectively has become a crucial factor,” he said.

Olamiji further argued that the rise of sports analytics presents significant opportunities for Nigerian youths, particularly those with interests in technology, mathematics and football.

He identified emerging career opportunities in data collection, statistical modelling, performance analysis, software development and digital sports content creation, stressing that what was once considered a niche area is gradually becoming a recognised profession globally.

He urged young Nigerians to embrace data-driven disciplines, describing sports analytics as a field capable of bridging technology and entertainment while creating new economic opportunities.

As the World Cup continues to captivate audiences worldwide, Olamiji maintained that predictive intelligence would increasingly influence the future of football, both on and off the pitch.

He added that platforms such as CRSPREDICTIONS demonstrate how local innovation can contribute meaningfully to global conversations in sports technology and analytics.

According to him, while the tournament may ultimately be remembered for memorable goals and dramatic moments, its lasting impact could also be measured by the growing role of data and intelligence in shaping the game.

“The future of football will belong not only to those who can play the game, but also to those who can understand it,” he said.
