Against the backdrop of increasing workplace tensions and growing concerns over industrial relations in the country, top government officials, labour leaders and industrial relations experts are to converge in Osogbo, Osun State, for a strategic national retreat aimed at strengthening social dialogue and promoting industrial peace as a foundation for economic prosperity.

The three-day National Retreat and Workshop, organised by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council, JNPSNC, will commence on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, bringing together stakeholders from across the federation to deliberate on pressing labour-management issues and evolving workplace realities.

The retreat, which has as its theme, “Consolidating Social Dialogue and Industrial Peace for Economic Prosperity,” is expected to serve as a platform for robust engagement among policymakers, labour leaders, public sector administrators and industrial relations practitioners on ways of fostering harmony in the workplace and boosting national productivity.

The programme will be declared open by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Didi Esther Walson-Jack, while the Minister of Labour and Employment, Mohammed Maigari, and the Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, will attend as Special Guests of Honour.

Also expected at the event is the Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, NRS, who will present a paper on issues relevant to the theme of the retreat and the broader national economic agenda.

A statement issued by the National Secretary of JNPSNC (Trade Union side), Olowoyo Gbenga, said the retreat has become necessary in view of the changing dynamics of industrial relations and the growing need for constructive engagement between employers and workers at all levels of government.

According to him, workplace relations in recent years have witnessed increasing complexities arising from economic pressures, changing work environments, workers’ welfare concerns and the need for greater collaboration between management and organised labour.

He noted that the retreat is designed to provide stakeholders with the opportunity to critically assess existing industrial relations practices, evaluate current challenges and develop innovative approaches capable of sustaining peace and stability in the workplace.

“The emerging scenarios in the workplace between management and workers urgently require a deeply rooted practical and intellectual engagement among all stakeholders in industrial relations practice both at the national and sub-national levels,” the statement said.

The council stressed that social dialogue remains one of the most effective tools for resolving workplace disputes, promoting mutual understanding and preventing industrial conflicts that could negatively impact governance, service delivery and economic growth.

JNPSNC further argued that “industrial peace is indispensable to sustainable development, insisting that no economy can achieve meaningful progress in an atmosphere characterised by persistent labour disputes, mistrust and workplace instability.”

The council maintained that economic prosperity begins with peace at work, adding that productive and harmonious workplaces create the enabling environment necessary for improved efficiency, enhanced public service delivery and increased investor confidence.

The retreat, hosted by the Osun State Government, is expected to attract participants from both the Government and Labour sides of the negotiating council from all parts of the country. Resource persons with vast experience in labour administration, public policy and industrial relations will lead discussions on contemporary workplace challenges and best practices for dispute resolution.

Participants are also expected to review emerging trends in collective bargaining, workers’ welfare, leadership in public service, conflict management and strategies for deepening cooperation between labour unions and government institutions.

The National Chairman of JNPSNC, Benjamin Uyanto, who is the Chief Host of the programme, expressed confidence that deliberations at the retreat would produce practical recommendations capable of enhancing industrial harmony and contributing to national development.
