Executive Chairman of Apapa-Iganmu Local Council Development Area, Hon. Jimoh Olawale Saliu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to child development and education, unveiling a series of interventions aimed at supporting students and protecting them from social vices.

Saliu made the declaration on Friday during the 2026 Children’s Day celebration held at Metropolitan Nursery and primary school Orile Lagos, where he urged children to make positive life choices and avoid activities capable of jeopardising their future.
Speaking on the theme of the celebration, “My Destiny… My Decision,” the council boss said the choices children make regarding education, character, discipline and personal development would determine the quality of their future.
He described children as the pride of their families and future leaders, innovators and nation-builders, stressing that every child possesses unique potential that must be nurtured.
“The theme of this year’s celebration is both timely and inspiring. It reminds us that while every child is born with great potential and a unique purpose, the decisions made today will shape the future they desire tomorrow,” he said.
Addressing the children, Saliu urged them to remain focused on their education and stay away from cultism, drug abuse, examination malpractice, cybercrime and violence.
“Dream big, work hard, remain focused and always make positive decisions. Say no to cultism, drug abuse, examination malpractice, cybercrime, violence and all forms of negative behaviour that can derail your future.
“Embrace diligence, honesty, respect, integrity and patriotism. These virtues will guide you on the path to success and greatness,” he stated.
Highlighting the achievements of his administration in the education sector, the chairman said the council had introduced what he described as the first-of-its-kind Summer Class programme in the LCDA to keep students academically engaged during long vacations.
According to him, the council has also distributed writing materials and exercise books to thousands of pupils and students, provided GCE and JAMB forms for deserving students, organised free preparatory classes and supported students with transportation assistance.
“We have distributed writing materials and exercise books to thousands of pupils and students. We have presented GCE forms to outstanding students, provided JAMB forms together with free preparatory classes, and offered transport fares to support students’ daily commute,” he said.
Saliu further disclosed that the council had paid school fees for several indigent students to ensure that financial constraints do not prevent children from accessing education.
“In addition, we have paid school fees for numerous indigent students of Apapa-Iganmu LCDA so that no child is left behind due to lack of funds,” he added.
The chairman also announced a strategic partnership between the council and the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices, POCACOV, aimed at strengthening advocacy against drug abuse, cultism, violence and other social vices among young people.
“Most recently, we entered into a strategic collaboration with POCACOV to intensify the campaign against drug abuse, cultism, violence and other social vices among our young ones.
“These initiatives are part of our unwavering resolve to support your progress and help you fulfil your God-given destinies,” he said.
Saliu commended parents, teachers, caregivers and other stakeholders for their contributions to the upbringing and development of children despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.
He described their sacrifices as invaluable to raising a responsible and productive generation.
The council chairman also called on residents and stakeholders to renew their commitment to protecting the rights of children and creating opportunities for them to thrive.
“As we celebrate today, let us all renew our commitment to protecting the rights of every child and providing them with opportunities to excel,” he said.
He assured the children of a brighter future and encouraged them to remain dedicated to their studies and become worthy ambassadors of their families, communities and the nation.
The event attracted pupils, students, teachers, parents, guardians, community leaders and government officials who gathered to commemorate the annual Children’s Day celebration in the council area.
