BOMADI—The Ijaw ethnic group has honoured Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, with the traditional title Ijaw-ebidou-owei—meaning “The one who seeks the wellbeing of the Ijaw nation”—in recognition of his development efforts in riverine communities.

The title was conferred by the Delta Ijaw Traditional Rulers Council at a grand reception held in Bomadi, headquarters of Bomadi Local Government Area. The event was organised by the Ijaw National Congress in collaboration with Delta Ijaw stakeholders.

Chairman of the Delta Ijaw Traditional Rulers Council and Ebenana-owei of Ogulagha Kingdom, HRM Joseph Timiyan, said the honour was a mark of appreciation for the governor’s inclusive leadership and commitment to the development of oil-rich but often underserved riverine areas.

President of the INC, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, noted that the event was also an opportunity to commend the governor’s performance, stressing that the Delta Ijaw people remain resolute in their support for his re-election in 2027.

“We have gathered to honour a leader who listens and delivers. We will continue to support you to finish strong,” Okaba said.

Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, who attended the event, praised Oborevwori’s performance, stating that the Ijaw people would not forget his contributions to the development of riverine communities.

He also called for unity among the Ijaw in Delta State and pledged collaboration with the Delta State Government to construct a bridge across the Bolou-Toru Creek to connect Bomadi and Ayamasa communities, thereby enhancing movement and economic activities between Delta and Bayelsa states.

A major highlight of the event was the endorsement of Governor Oborevwori as the preferred candidate of Delta Ijaw for the 2027 general elections. The motion, moved by Hon. Julius Pondi and seconded by Hon. Kenneth Oboro Preyor, was adopted through a voice vote presided over by the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, with attendees unanimously expressing support.

Speaking at the event, Governor Oborevwori assured the people that key infrastructure projects, including the Ayakoromor Bridge, would be completed within his first tenure, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the development of riverine communities.
