2027: APC chieftain urges unity amid Oyo governorship tensions

By Adeola Badru

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State and former Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government, Yinka Akinbode, has urged party members and stakeholders to avoid divisions over the selection of a governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a statement he personally signed and released to the media, Akinbode warned that disagreements over zoning arrangements and candidate selection could undermine the party’s chances at the polls.

“Failure to reach agreement on terms and the choice of candidate in any political party often affects its chances in an election,” he said.

He emphasised the need for unity, noting that internal discord has historically weakened political parties during elections.

“It is imperative for members to come together to fine-tune strategies capable of delivering electoral victory, rather than engaging in bickering and actions that could fracture the party,” he added.

Akinbode maintained that any candidate emerging through a consensus process should be fully supported by all party members.

“Whoever emerges through consensus must be accepted by all, and members should be prepared to work with such a candidate,” he said, adding that stakeholders would not select anyone who does not reflect the party’s collective interest.

On speculation surrounding the emergence of Senator Sarafadeen Abiodun Alli as a leading contender, Akinbode described him as the most suitable choice at present.

He dismissed concerns over the controversy surrounding the conferment of an Obaship title as politically motivated.

“The issue surrounding the conferment of an Obaship title is purely political and does not hold water,” he said.

Akinbode also criticised a recent communication from the state government to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Adewolu Ladoja, regarding the conferment of an Obaship title on Alli.

“That letter is political, inconsequential and has already been discarded. It carries no weight and amounts to nothing,” he said.

He further suggested that the development reflects concerns over Alli’s growing political profile.

“The move is borne out of fear of Senator Alli’s rising status. It is evident that he remains a strong contender,” he added.
