Lord Brett McLean, a respected British civic leader and long standing community advocate, continues to receive recognition for his extensive contributions to humanitarian service, local governance, and charitable development across East Sussex and beyond.

Born on 19 March 1975 in Icklesham, East Sussex, Lord McLean spent his formative years in several communities including St. Leonard’s-On-Sea, Sidley, Hersden, Gravesend, and Hastings, as well as a period living in Berlin. These early experiences exposed him to diverse social environments and cultures, helping shape his enduring commitment to civic engagement and volunteerism.

Lord McLean’s dedication to community work began during his school years at Bexhill High School, where he volunteered at the North Bexhill Day Centre for the Elderly. He later pursued studies in Health and Social Care at Hastings College of Arts and Technology, laying a foundation for his lifelong involvement in social support and charitable initiatives.

Over the years, Lord McLean has built a reputation as a key figure in East Sussex’s voluntary and community sector. His roles have included serving as President of Hastings Lions and Bexhill in Bloom, Chairman of the Hastings Dementia Action Alliance, and Ambassador for the Sussex Association of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (SASBAH).

He has also supported several charities as Patron, including Gizmo Kids, Brown Bread Horse Rescue Centre, and Happy Paws Puppy Rescue, while contributing to local development as a Trustee of Ore Community Centre and Hastings & Rother Furniture Services.

Beyond direct charity work, Lord McLean has participated in strategic initiatives such as Bexhill Forward and the Hastings Coastal Communities Team, where he contributed to economic and social development planning across the region.

Lord McLean’s involvement in public leadership began early. From 1996 to 2000, he served as one of the youngest elected members of Hastings Borough Council. He later became the youngest regional chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses, also serving as deputy national councillor and chairing East Sussex County Council’s Economic Advisory Board. These positions enabled him to advocate for small enterprises, community growth, and inclusive local governance.

In 2026, research journalist and Merchant Navy Officer Mujahid Al-Ibenu highlighted Lord McLean’s longstanding civic contributions in a feature article published by BusinessDay Nigeria. The report noted his British Citizen Award Certificate of Recognition, multiple lifetime achievement honors, and sustained involvement in community-focused organizations.
