Doctor accused of disclosing patient’s medical report meets bail conditions

A Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting at Jabi, Abuja, has granted bail to Dr. John Abebe of Joje Fertility Centre Limited, who was arraigned alongside his company on a three-count charge brought by the Inspector General of Police over allegations of unlawfully disclosing a patient’s medical report.

At the proceedings on March 11, 2026, presided over by Justice Fashola, Dr. Abebe and Joje Fertility Centre Limited pleaded not guilty to all three counts.

Defence counsel Marvin Omorogbe, Esq., subsequently moved a bail application, urging the court to admit his client to bail on liberal terms.

The court granted the application, and Abebe has since met the bail conditions and returned home to his family.

The charge stems from a petition filed by one Hassan Turaki with the Nigeria Police Force, alleging that Abebe disclosed his wife’s confidential medical report in a correspondence to the doctor’s legal counsel — an act the petitioner considered a breach of patient confidentiality.

However, the management of Joje Fertility Centre Limited has denied all allegations, describing the petition and the resulting criminal charge as a smear campaign designed to tarnish the reputation of Abebe, who has practiced medicine for over 30 years.

The case has been adjourned to allow the prosecution to open its case.
