Benin City—Popular Edo State comedian, Ephraim Osayuwamen Osifo, known by his stage name Samba De Comic, has opened up about the silent battles within the local comedy scene while reaffirming his mission to use humor as a tool against cultism and youth violence.
Speaking during his birthday celebration, Osifo, a Theatre Arts and Communication graduate from the University of Benin, revealed a “cold war” among comedians in Benin, suggesting that some industry tensions are more spiritual than physical. Despite the rivalry, he praised fellow comedian MC Casino for promoting unity and encouraging growth among peers.
“Casino believes that lighting your candle makes the room brighter. He wants everybody to grow,” Osifo said, highlighting his colleague’s supportive approach in an industry often marked by competition.
Beyond comedy industry politics, Osifo is focused on tackling pressing social issues. Through his performances, he addresses cultism, peer pressure, and the lure of street life, turning his craft into a platform for social transformation.
“I don’t just want to be an epitome of a good image in sensitising people and changing negative narratives. I want to take my craft to a global audience,” he said.
Osifo also appealed to individuals and corporate organizations to invest in Edo State’s entertainment and creative industry, warning that the lack of support has driven many talented youths to Lagos in search of opportunities.
“Our people must learn to invest in entertainment to discourage our youths from leaving Benin,” he urged.
Determined and optimistic, Osifo envisions comedy not just as entertainment but as a movement—reclaiming the streets from cultism, inspiring hope, and shaping a new generation through laughter and positive change.
