SOKOTO:–The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to prioritising the welfare and wellbeing of Nigerian troops, describing it as central to national security and military professionalism.

General Musa made the remarks on Saturday while commissioning newly renovated Corporals and Below Quarters at the Giginya Military Cantonment in Sokoto, an intervention he said reflects the government’s resolve to improve living conditions and boost the morale of personnel at the frontlines of national defence.

He stressed that the strength of the Armed Forces is inseparable from the wellbeing of its men and women, noting that investments in accommodation, remuneration and general welfare remain a topmost priority under his leadership.

According to him, a motivated and well catered military is better positioned to confront contemporary security challenges.

The Defence Minister also used the occasion to call on parents across the country to encourage and support their children to succeed in life, urging them not to give up in the process of moulding and guiding their wards.

“Parents should not relent in modelling their children for a better future,” he said.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey as a nation, General Musa observed that many could not have imagined the current realities confronting the country, but insisted that collective responsibility remains the pathway forward. “We should work together as one family for us to succeed,” he said, emphasising unity, resilience and shared sacrifice.

He reiterated the Armed Forces’ commitment to national unity, declaring that Nigeria would remain an indivisible entity. The minister added that forces hostile to the nation’s peace and stability would not prevail, assuring citizens that the military is working tirelessly to secure the country.

General Musa further disclosed ongoing efforts to improve the welfare package of soldiers, including plans to review salaries and allowances, in line with prevailing economic realities and the demands placed on troops nationwide.

In his vote of thanks, the Garrison Commander, Brigadier General Abdulmalik Mohammad Jibia, described the minister’s visit as a clear demonstration of the Defence Ministry’s concern for the welfare and wellbeing of personnel. He said the project would significantly enhance morale and operational effectiveness within the cantonment.

Brigadier General Jibia also commended the General Officer Commanding 8 Division, Nigerian Army, and Commander Sector 2, North-West Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Bemgba Koughna, for ensuring the speedy completion of the project.

Earlier, the Project Coordinator, Alhaji Abdulrahman Musa, explained that the renovation involved multiple components executed strictly according to approved standards and specifications to ensure durability and safety.

He disclosed that some sections had to be demolished and rebuilt to meet quality requirements, adding that while the structures might not appear entirely new, the materials used were of high quality and built to last.

Alhaji Musa commended the 4 Engineering Brigade for insisting on quality control, as well as members of the barracks community for their cooperation and encouragement throughout the construction period.

According to him, the project was awarded for renovation on 15 August 2025 and was completed on 21 December 2025, within a four-month timeline.

He expressed gratitude to the Minister of Defence for his unwavering commitment and leadership, describing the project as a practical reflection of the government’s promise to place troops’ welfare at the heart of national defence efforts.
