Eko PHCN to deliver sustainable power

By KUNLE KALEJAYE
Eko Electricity Distribution Company has assured customers within the zone of sustainable electricity supply within the next two months with the ongoing power sector reforms.

The Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mr Oladele Amoda, gave the assurance at a customer’s parliament organised by the zone recently in Lagos.

Amoda said that the essence of the parliament is to educate customers on the proposed changes in electricity tariff, and get feedback as a way of improving electricity supply in the zone.

“The hike is not really a hike but rather a review because Nigerians and small scale entrepreneurs will benefit more from the tariff increment.”

He said that to have cost reflective tariff that will attract investors, there is the need to review the tariff, adding that under the current structure, PHCN is unable to pay for gas used to fire most of the plants across the country.

“Over N40billion is estimated as being owed gas companies by PHCN,’’ he said, adding that with the ongoing reform in the power sector, no customer would be billed on arbitrary on estimation.

Amoda said that the proposed increase in tariff from June 1, by Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, will guarantee increase and improvement in electricity distribution over the next few years.

“With the ongoing power sector reforms, nobody will be billed on arbitrary estimation. In the next two months to this time Nigerians will begin to witness tremendous and sustainable power supply in the country,’’ he said.

The PHCN boss stressed that the Multi-Year Tariff Order, MYTO 2, is aimed at helping investors to recover their costs and earn a suitable return on their investments.

He added that all electricity consumers will be metered within a maximum of 18 months, and in the interim; customers without functional meters will be billed using a designed methodology to prevent overbilling.
