African artificial intelligence guru and Group CEO of Etihuku, a technology and innovation company, Jeremiah Olamijuwon has been awarded an honorary doctorate degree by ESCT University following his invitation to deliver the university’s Convocation Lecture in the Republic of Benin.
Olamijuwon was invited due to his leadership recognition in artificial intelligence, innovation ecosystems, and technology-driven development across Africa.
Following his address to graduating and incoming students, the university conferred on him an honorary doctorate, citing his sustained contributions to AI research, capacity building, and pan-African collaboration.
Announcing the award, ESCT highlighted Olamijuwon’s active role in strengthening machine learning research communities on the continent, particularly through his leadership and involvement in IndabaX Benin and similar initiatives across multiple African regions. His work was noted for advancing locally grounded AI research while connecting African researchers to global standards and networks.
Speaking, Olamijuwon described the moment as “unexpected and deeply meaningful, noting that the award represents a recognition of collective African effort in advancing AI research and innovation rather than an individual achievement.
“The doctorate follows my recent receipt of the inaugural Pamodzi Award from the Deep Learning Indaba, reinforcing my growing influence in shaping Africa’s AI research, education, and innovation landscape.
“I will continue to advocate for an AI for Africa, by Africa approach that emphasises ethical development, local relevance, and long-term capacity building.”
