Delta school of health students on rampage over non payment of allowance

By FESTUS AHON
UGHELLI – STUDENTS of the Delta State School of Health Technology, Ofuoma-Ughelli has gone on rampage over non payment of their yearly allowance of N104,000.

The students are also prostested against N10,000 levy for computer training, N6,000 levy for sports and N4,500 for school uniform and the monthly allowance of N5,000 being paid to 300 level students of the institution.

Coming out in their large numbers, the students locked out the Provost of the School, Mr Ben Ogheneroro and other staff after sacking the institution’s security guards.

Attempt by the school authority to use armed soldiers and other security agents to stop the students from carrying out the protest on Wednesday were unsuccessful.

A student of the institution, who spoke to newsmen on condition of anonymity, said the State Government was owing two years of the N104,000 allowance, adding that all peace attempt to get the school authority to take up the case had failed.

According to the student, the school authority had in the early days of their agitation for the payment of the money and the N5,000 monthly allowance, threatened to expel any student seen championing the demands for the payment of the arrears.

Describing the Provost, Mr Ben Ogheneroro as insensitive to their plights, the student alleged that they were not being given any training on computer, decrying that; “even the N6,000 they collected from us in the name of sport fees is a fraud. We don’t engage in any sporting activities in the school.

The student also lamented that the monthly N5,000 allowance being paid to 300 level students was last paid in September last year, explaining that the N104, 000 was only being paid to 200 level students.

The source, who spoke further, appealed to the State Government to look into their demands and accused the school authority of playing politics with their agitations.

As at the time of filing this report, effort was still being made to reach the Provost of the School, Mr Ben Ogheneroro and leadership of the Students Union Government for comments.
