LAGOS—Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, LASIEC, said no fewer than 100 policemen would be deployed for tomorrow’s re-run election in Ward ‘H’ Oduselu/Ola in Mushin Local Government Area of the state.

It will be recalled that the election petitions tribunal ordered the state electoral commission to conduct a re-run of the councillorship election in the ward within 90 days of its ruling.

At a briefing at the commission’s headquarters, Chairman of LASIEC, Justice Abdulfatai Adeyinka (rtd), said the policemen would be drafted to the 39 polling units in the ward.

He said: “At least two policemen would be assigned to each of the polling units while others would be assigned to the collation centre and patrol of the area within the hours of the election. This was how we deployed the police officers at the 2011 election proper where we drafted over 17, 000 policemen to man the nooks and crannies of the state during the election.  The commission will not have any objection to demand for additional police men if the need arise during the hours of the election.

Adeyinka said “the re-run election will take place between 8am and 4 pm. While the voting proper will close by 3pm, the counting of the votes would commence immediately and would end 4 pm. There are 18, 000 registered voters in the ward and the commission has provided for the same number of ballot papers.

The commission would adopt the ‘open-secret-open’ system of election that is votes would be counted openly and announced in each of the 39 polling units, while the result of the election would be collated at the ward centre.”
