As Nigeria’s economy underwent a digital shift in the late 2010s, the urgency of protecting sensitive data in healthcare and agriculture became increasingly apparent. At the center of this movement stood a quiet but determined engineer—Michael Friday Umakor, a Cloud and Network Security Engineer at Hoollaa Connect, a tech-driven digital services provider based in Lagos.

Umakor distinguished himself as one of Nigeria’s most forward-thinking cybersecurity professionals. Recognizing the vulnerabilities in the digital systems of hospitals and agribusinesses, he designed and deployed secure, scalable cloud infrastructure that would later become models for resilience in data protection. He introduced real-time data loss prevention protocols, automated encryption schemes, and penetration-resistant system architectures that protected client networks on both AWS and Microsoft Azure platforms.

His most significant contribution, however, was in making these technologies accessible to resource-constrained sectors. Umakor’s cloud architecture designs allowed public and private hospitals in Lagos to achieve NDPR-compliant data storage (Nigerian Data Protection Regulation) and enabled farms to adopt precision farming tools secured by multi-layered authentication systems. Reports from client institutions documented over 40% reduction in unauthorized access incidents and up to 30% reductions in operational cybersecurity costs within a year of implementation.

But Michael Umakor’s vision extended beyond code. He founded Nigeria’s first cybersecurity awareness workshop focused exclusively on SMEs. These free sessions trained over 100 early-career IT professionals in best practices in cloud security, risk mitigation, and threat response. At a time when cybersecurity expertise was siloed within corporate headquarters, Umakor was pioneering knowledge-sharing platforms for the underserved.

What sets him apart is his deep understanding of both technical systems and the socio-economic context in which they operate. His work not only protected data but empowered Nigerian SMEs to participate confidently in the digital economy.
