The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), the apex socio-political body of the South-South geo-political zone, has called on governors of the region not to relent in their developmental efforts, declaring that the time to rest on their oars has not yet come.
In a message to mark Democracy Day on May 29, 2025, PANDEF National Chairman, Ambassador Godknows Igali, commended the leadership and performance of the South-South governors but stressed that more work remains to be done to fully harness the region’s potential.
“With our eyes on the ball, the governors and the people of the South-South should remain optimistic. The region is on a path of growth and must continue to emerge as a beacon of hope, progress, and development in Nigeria,” Igali said.
He urged the governors to strengthen collaborations, particularly through the BRACED Commission framework and inter-state partnerships, to transform the region into a robust economic corridor.
On the political turmoil in Rivers State, where a state of emergency has reportedly been declared, PANDEF reaffirmed its commitment to peace and unity. “Rivers State will soon be free. We will intensify our efforts to mobilize and unite our people towards peace. This is the indispensable foundation upon which meaningful development can thrive,” Igali stated.
The forum praised the governors for their strides in infrastructure, agriculture, urban renewal, port development, and social welfare. Special commendation was given to Governors Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Bassey Otu (Cross River), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), and Monday Okpebholo (Edo), whose collective efforts have significantly enhanced regional connectivity and integration.
“These initiatives are laying a solid foundation for sustained economic growth across the Niger Delta,” the statement read. “In addition to physical infrastructure, the governors have shown commendable commitment to healthcare, education, and civil service welfare, resulting in tangible improvements in citizens’ quality of life.”
PANDEF also called on traditional rulers, elders, community leaders, and all citizens of the region to continue supporting the development drive with prayers, cooperation, and unity.
“If this trajectory is maintained, the South-South is poised to set national benchmarks and serve as a model for other regions in Nigeria,” Igali concluded.
