A Nigerian technologist and educator, Edwin Imohimi, has unveiled a new artificial intelligence, AI, initiative aimed at transforming classroom learning in underserved regions across the country.

Speaking about the project, Imohimi said the goal is to develop an AI-powered education system that supports both students and teachers, particularly in low-resource environments where large class sizes and limited teaching tools are the norm.

“Many schools in rural areas are stretched beyond their limits. My system is designed to provide intelligent support using technology that works even with minimal internet access,” he said.

According to Imohimi, “The AI system incorporates a large language model trained in key academic subjects such as mathematics and science. It offers students real-time explanations, adjusts to their learning pace, and tracks their progress using analytics.

“Teachers are given feedback on student engagement and comprehension, enabling timely intervention and personalized instruction.”

“This is not about replacing teachers but enhancing their capacity to reach every learner,” Imohimi added.

Commenting on the project, education policy analyst Dr. Ifeoma Eze described it as “a structural shift in how education is delivered.”

She noted that the integration of AI into public education could help close the learning gap in disadvantaged communities.

The system, according to Imohimi, is currently in its prototype stage, with pilot testing expected to begin in selected public schools by mid-2026.

He added that his team is focused on making the platform user-friendly, scalable, and adaptable to various educational settings.

Drawing from his earlier research on secure AI models, Imohimi emphasized that the system uses federated learning and differential privacy to protect student data while maintaining functionality.

“This ensures that while we improve access and outcomes, we also maintain trust and data security in educational environments,” he said.

With strong backing and successful trials, Imohimi emphasised that AI system could set the stage for a new era of learning in Nigeria, one where every student, regardless of location, has the opportunity to thrive.
