Graceland International School, Port Harcourt, Rivers State has emerged the winner of this year’s National Mathematics Tournament held in Lagos at the weekend.
The school was represented by Agbo Adoga and Elvis Chiedozie, who defeated representatives of Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja in the final.
Adoga and Chiedozie won the star prize of N3,000,000 from which they will take one million naira each and the remaining amount shared between their school and Mathematics teacher.
Loyola Jesuit College Abuja won N2,000,000 and the third position went to Austical Memorial College in Anambra State. They won one million naira for their efforts.
Consolation prizes were given five other schools that made it to the last eight.
That is separate from the N100,000 given each of the 18 students that emerged from the six geo-political zones.
Speaking on the occasion, the President of Maths4lLife, the non-profit organisation that organised the event, Mr Omoniyi Osuntuyi, said the 2025 edition coincided with the 10th anniversary of the Foundation.
“I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to our sponsors and volunteers, whose efforts have made it possible for us to host this tournament in person this year, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the Mathematics for Life Foundation.
“This year’s event is particularly special as we celebrate our decade-long commitment to mathematics education alongside the finals of the 2025 National Mathematics Tournament. The initial round of the tournament was conducted virtually on Saturday, February 1, 2025, attracting over 3,000 students from all 36 states in Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory.
“We awarded cash prizes of N100,000 each to the top three students from six regions: South-West, South[1]South, South-East, North-West, North-East, and North Central, totaling 18 outstanding students. The eight schools that have qualified for today’s finals are from Lagos, Ogun, Edo, Anambra, Rivers, Kaduna, and the Federal Capital Territory.
“Additionally, we are pleased to offer a professional development training session titled “From Classroom to Career: How Math Shapes Your Future,” presented by Jessica Ogwu, a distinguished Data Engineer. I guarantee that this session will offer significant insights into the practical application of mathematics in our everyday lives.
