The Chairman of Ughelli South Local Government Council, Dr. Lucky Avweromre, while inspecting ongoing projects in the destroyed Okuama Community, gave contractors handling various jobs a four-week ultimatum to complete their work.
The construction works are part of the Delta State Government’s efforts to rehabilitate and resettle the Okuama people in their ancestral land.
It would be recalled that the army destroyed the Okuama Community during a retaliatory invasion after losing 17 soldiers near the Community.
The Delta State government has embarked on a concerted effort to resettle the inhabitants, with teams of engineers and contractors deployed to sites for various works.
Meeting with them at the Okuama community to supervise the works routinely, the council boss tasked the various contractors handling the projects to speed up the work pace, adding that the displaced Okuama people need to have their homes as soon as possible.
Avweromre, in his reassurance to the contractors and engineers, reiterated his commitment to making all necessary facilities and an enabling environment available for the projects to be delivered at a set time.
The Council Chairman, however, appreciated the Delta state Governor, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for his concern for the people of Okuama, stressing that the number one citizen has not relented in his effort to reintegrate the affected people since the incident occurred.
The Council Chairman gave a marching order mandating the contractors handling the projects to, as a matter of necessity, complete the projects within four weeks, emphasizing that His Excellency wants the people of the Okuama community to have their comfort by returning to their houses without further delay.
The projects inspected include a 40-room Modern Hall with Kitchens and toilets, a Health Center, a Primary School, and a Secondary School.
