The Federal University of Allied Health Sciences Enugu (FUAHSE) has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing Nigeria’s healthcare manpower needs, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for the institution’s establishment.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday to mark the university’s inaugural Founders’ Day celebration, Vice Chancellor Prof. John Emaimo pledged that FUAHSE would play a crucial role in fulfilling the president’s healthcare expansion agenda.

Prof. Emaimo recalled that on March 14, 2024, President Tinubu approved the establishment of FUAHSE, with a promise to double the number of healthcare professionals graduating from accredited institutions within three years.

“We hereby confirm to Mr. President that we stand on his mandate, and his aspiration is achievable within the given timeframe,” Emaimo assured.

Responding to concerns about the migration of Nigerian health workers abroad, Prof. Emaimo noted that the university, formerly a Dental College, has been producing healthcare professionals not only for Nigeria and Africa but also for the global workforce.

“We train to fill the manpower gap in Nigeria, Africa, and globally. The idea is not just to ensure that trained personnel remain in the country. Even those leaving have positive ‘plough-backs’ to Nigeria. It is a sense of pride for us that the professionals we train are in demand worldwide,” he stated.

He added that while the university continues to address Nigeria’s healthcare needs, it also takes pride in exporting professionals who are making significant contributions in countries such as the USA and Saudi Arabia.

As part of the Founders’ Day celebration, the university organized a road walk activity tagged ‘John Emaimo Walk for Life’, with the grand finale scheduled for Friday at the university’s Trans-Ekulu, Enugu campus.

Prof. Emaimo extended appreciation to key stakeholders, including:

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (Visitor of the University)

Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate

Minister for Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa

Minister of State for Health, Dr. Isiaq Salako

The event is expected to host top government officials, religious leaders, academics, traditional rulers, parents, and students.

A Legacy of 70 Years in Healthcare Training

Highlighting the institution’s legacy, Prof. Emaimo noted that FUAHSE builds on 70 years of excellence in training top-tier healthcare professionals, many of whom are serving in Ghana, Cameroon, and other African nations.

“We have abundant reasons to celebrate Founders’ Day, but foremost among them is our transformation over the decades into a critical healthcare training institution that continues to produce some of the finest medical experts in Africa,” he concluded.
