Dr. Ishiak othman Khalid, Acting DG, National Agricultural Seeds Council, NASC, has disclosed that the country’s agricultural sector will be transformed with SeedTracker and SeedCodex.


He said the innovative technologies are designed to improve seed quality, traceability and farmer confidence.


Speaking with journalists, Khalid said the National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC) of Nigeria through innovation aim to combat the challenges of counterfeit seed and inefficient certification processes, “ensuring farmers have access to high-quality, certified seeds essential for improved productivity and food security.”


Khalid disclosed that with SeedTracker and SeedCodex, NASC underscores its commitment to innovation and farmer empowerment.


“These technologies eliminate low-quality seeds, safeguard livelihoods and contribute to achieving food security. “Farmers gain access to certified seeds and expert guidance, boosting productivity and profitability, while policymakers and development agencies leverage reliable data for impactful interventions.


He explained that NASC’s adoption of these cutting-edge solutions sets a benchmark for agricultural excellence, driving Nigeria and Africa towards a resilient and inclusive agricultural ecosystem.


He said the SeedTracker is a digital platform that organizes seed production data, enabling seamles communication among stakeholders, including producers, regulators and farmers.


“The system offers centralized access to vital data like seed quantity, variety and availability, fostering transparency and informed decision-making.


“It also streamlines the registration of seed producers, connects them with buyers and digitizes seed certification simplifying compliance monitoring for regulators.”


Dr. Khalid noted that farmers will benefit from expert advice on crop management, while policymakers and development agencies will utilize it for data-driven interventions, promoting food security and growth.


“Its adaptability across crops and regions positions it as a game-changer in transforming seed systems.”

The Acting DG, National Agricultural Seeds Council, NASC, explained that SeedCodex complements SeedTracker by combating counterfeit seeds through electronic verification.


“Unique scratch-off codes on seed packages allow farmers to verify authenticity instantly via SMS. This enhances trust in seed quality and protects farmers from substandard products.”


He said for seed companies and agro dealers, “SeedCodex assures customers of product legitimacy.
“Regulatory bodies use the system to monitor compliance with standards, while researchers gain valuable insights to improve seed quality assurance processes.”
