Maureen Okwulogu, a distinguished fellow of the Society of Nigeria Theatre Association, SONTA, has been awarded the prestigious Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund scholarship for her academic and artistic excellence by the University of Lagos, UNILAG.

TETFund scholarship is a prestigious award granted to Nigerian academic staff for advanced studies and it recognizes only the most outstanding scholars, providing them the opportunity to pursue advanced studies.

Okwulogu is one of the few nominated by the University of Lagos for the highly competitive award based on her demonstrated excellence and significant contributions in her area of expertise. She is currently pursuing her PhD in Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Texas at Dallas, where she continues to make strides in academic research and artistic innovation.

The award will support her research on the intersection of global film distribution, cultural representation, and the digital economy, with an emphasis on the evolving role of international markets in shaping the global cinematic landscape. Her work examines the impact of digital platforms, streaming services, and cross-cultural exchange on the accessibility, reception, and profitability of films across borders. This research directly aligns with critical challenges in the U.S. film industry, such as expanding international market reach, promoting cultural diversity in content, and navigating the complexities of global distribution networks.

Her background

After graduating at the top of her class in 2014 from the Department of Creative Arts at the University of Lagos, Okwulogu’s brilliance was immediately recognised when she received an award for academic excellence and was retained as a Graduate Assistant.

Her remarkable contributions and dedication soon earned her a promotion to Assistant Lecturer.

In recognition of her teaching prowess, she was honoured with a Teaching Assistant Award from the University of Lagos. This prestigious accolade funded her Master of Arts in Theatre Arts, during which she submitted two unpublished theses: “Stage Acting as a Platform to Screen Acting” and “An Interrogation of Production Management in Nigeria.” These works highlight her commitment to bridging theoretical exploration with practical insights into the creative industries.

This prestigious award solidifies Ms. Okwulogu reputation as a leading voice in her field, marking another milestone in her impactful career. This accolade not only highlights her exceptional academic achievements but also underscores her growing influence in global humanities discourse.
