Four people, including three policemen, were crushed to death in an auto accident in the commercial town of Ore, in the Odigbo council area of Ondo State.
Saturday Vanguard gathered that the policemen were part of the monitoring team from the state police command. They had traveled from the police headquarters in Akure, the state capital, to arrest a female suspect when the unfortunate incident occurred.
Sources in the town reported that a truck descending the Ore bridge rammed into the police vehicle, killing the female suspect and the three policemen inside.
Reports said that the driver of the trailer, which was coming from the Ijebu-Ode axis, lost control, crossed the median, and collided with the police vehicle transporting the detectives and the female suspect.
Eyewitnesses stated that while the three police detectives and the female suspect died on the spot, another police detective sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a private hospital in the town.
Contacted for comment, Funmi Odunlami, the spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed the incident and described it as unfortunate.
The State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Samuel Ibitoye, stated that the accident occurred due to excessive speeding by the trailer driver.
Ibitoye added that the bodies of the victims were taken to the state hospital morgue in Ore.
