The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has raised concerns over an alleged conspiracy to frame prominent opposition figures. The group claims that Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, spokesperson for the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), and Uche Nnadi, National Chairman of the Action Peoples Party (APP), are being targeted in a scheme involving accusations of bribing judicial officers.

This follows Ugochinyere’s outspoken stance on the ongoing crisis within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the political turmoil in Rivers State that led to the APP’s victory in the Local Government Council elections, and recent revelations about land racketeering in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In a press statement signed by HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, the group condemned the alleged plot, stating, “It is alarming that such a scheme could be orchestrated against individuals merely exercising their rights to free speech and political expression. This is a clear attempt to silence dissenting voices.”

HURIWA emphasized that the accusations against Ugochinyere and Nnadi appear to be part of a strategic move to undermine their credibility.

“This is not just about them; it’s about stifling opposition and creating an environment where truth cannot prevail,” Onwubiko added. The association urged relevant authorities to investigate the claims thoroughly instead of allowing politically motivated narratives to influence public perception.

In response, one of Ugochinyere’s lawyers, Maxwell Opara, dismissed the allegations, describing them as “a desperate attempt by those threatened by his advocacy for transparency and accountability.” Opara reaffirmed Ugochinyere’s commitment to exposing corruption, particularly regarding land deals in Abuja.

APP’s National Publicity Secretary, Ugo Apumaga, also reacted, stating, “These baseless accusations are meant to distract us from our mission. We stand firm against corruption and will continue our fight for justice.” His comments reflect growing concerns among opposition leaders about efforts to delegitimize their political actions through smear campaigns.

HURIWA has urged citizens to stay vigilant against tactics designed to manipulate public opinion and suppress opposition. It called for any allegations against Ugochinyere to be dismissed as unfounded.
