In this interview, Principal Consultant at FandF Consultancy,   Dr. Fin Dittimi, discusses the potential for STEAM in Africa and the pathway to a future where the continent can realize its full prospects in the global economy.

Every year, the world celebrates and spotlights World STEM/STEAM Day. Looking at the state of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in Africa, is there anything to celebrate?

There is certainly a lot to celebrate. Africa’s youths are driving innovation in fields like mobile banking and healthcare technology, which are transforming lives across the continent. We are also seeing a growing number of STEAM initiatives—coding bootcamps, tech hubs, and STEM-focused schools—focusing on equipping our young people with crucial skills. While we still have challenges to overcome, the youth-driven innovation we’re seeing is a strong indicator of Africa’s potential to harness STEAM for positive change.

Research has consistently shown that countries with a strong focus on STEAM education tend to have higher levels of economic growth and competitiveness. Why has Africa not hacked this code to end over half a century of underdevelopment?

Africa’s underdevelopment in STEAM is largely due to systemic challenges. Infrastructure gaps—like limited electricity and internet access—hinder consistent progress. Additionally, many skilled professionals seek better opportunities abroad, creating a brain drain that deprives us of local expertise. To truly unlock STEAM’s potential, we need strategic investment in education, infrastructure, and incentives to retain talent. When we start tackling these foundational issues, we can begin to realize the economic growth STEAM brings.

Tech-related jobs, particularly in AI and cybersecurity, are experiencing rapid growth, with projected increases in demand over the next decade. How can Nigeria tap into tech jobs to reduce unemployment that is skyrocketing at an alarming rate?

To reduce unemployment, we need accessible STEAM education that aligns with the current job market, particularly in high-demand areas like AI and cybersecurity. Public-private partnerships are essential here, as they can create job-ready graduates by offering hands-on experience and mentorship. By investing in tech training programs and fostering industry collaborations, we can prepare a generation that’s equipped for the digital economy and ready to fill these critical roles.

How important is it for individuals, especially mid-career professionals, to consider a second career in STEAM, and what are the benefits?

Pursuing a second career in tech can open up new opportunities, especially as industries increasingly rely on technology. For mid-career professionals, transitioning into fields like data analysis, cybersecurity, or project management can provide increased job security and growth potential. Reskilling in tech isn’t just about keeping up with change; it’s about tapping into flexible, rewarding careers that are in high demand.

With the rise of remote work, there are now ways to earn income online. What advice do you have for people interested in building a career or side income through online and remote opportunities?
