Keyamo
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, has announced a series of reforms aimed at improving service delivery and maintaining high standards of environmental cleanliness at airports across Nigeria.
The initiatives are designed to address the needs of the traveling public and ensure that the country’s airports operate at optimal efficiency.
The Minister plans to appoint voluntary Special Airport Marshals from key stakeholders, including journalists, representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and state government officials. These individuals, stationed in cities with airports, will conduct unscheduled inspections to monitor staff conduct and assess hygiene levels.
The marshals will report directly to the Minister, providing an independent assessment of airport operations. This oversight aims to complement official reports from Airport Managers, ensuring that funds allocated for airport maintenance are utilized effectively.
As part of his hands-on approach, Keyamo will lead monthly surprise inspections of airports nationwide. Accompanied by senior officials, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and members of the Senate and House Committees on Aviation, the Minister will participate in operational activities and address staff directly.
During these visits, he will listen to employees’ concerns, encourage professionalism, and emphasize courteous service to passengers.
In the coming weeks, the Ministry will engage stakeholders to identify suitable candidates for the Special Airport Marshal program. The names of the selected marshals will be made public to ensure transparency and accountability in the process.
Keyamo’s reforms reflect his commitment to transforming Nigeria’s airports into models of efficiency, cleanliness, and customer service. “These measures are aimed at ensuring that our airports meet the expectations of the traveling public and operate at world-class standards,” he said.
Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister, stated that the initiatives demonstrate a dedication to transparency and accountability, ensuring that airport managers are held to the highest standards.
The reforms are expected to bring significant improvements to Nigeria’s aviation sector, enhancing the travel experience for all passengers.
