Consulting firm marks World Diabetes Day

By Gabriel Olawale

World Diabetes Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness about diabetes as a critical global public health issue and emphasize the collective and individual actions needed to improve the prevention, diagnosis and management of the condition.

This year’s theme, “Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps,” underpins the commitment to reducing the risk of diabetes, and ensuring that all people who are diagnosed with diabetes have access to equitable, comprehensive, affordable and quality treatment and care.

Speaking on this year theme, Group Head, Client Services, Asclepius Consulting, Dr. Tosin Longe, said that the theme highlights the impact of diabetes on people’s physical and mental health. It also emphasizes the importance of effective diabetes management and how it can improve people’s quality of life.

“Diabetes is a disorder in which the body fails to process and utilize the glucose which is produced from the food we consume. There are mainly three types of diabetes mellitus; Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes and Gestational diabetes.

“Glucose is the leading source of energy in the body. Inefficient assimilation of glucose can hamper one’s day-to-day activity, and unmanaged diabetes could lead to fatal complications like cardiovascular issues, nerve damage, kidney damage, foot damage, skin infections, erectile dysfunction, depression, dental problems and more.

“Type 1 Diabetes cannot be prevented while preventing type 2 diabetes involves a healthy lifestyle: a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding sugary and processed foods. Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial as obesity increases the risk. Even a small weight loss can significantly reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Lastly, regular screenings and check-ups, especially for people at risk, can detect early signs and delay or prevent the onset of diabetes.”
