The prestigious social club, Eko Club, Lagos, has held prayers at the Central Mosque, Lagos and the Methodist Church, Lagos as part of activities to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

The celebration which had a series of events showcasing its achievements and commitment to the community, kick started last week with paying homage to the Lagos Monarch, His Royal Majesty, Oba Rilwan Akiolu.

In an interview, the President of Eko Club, Mr. Razaak Olugbenga Amodu, highlighted the club’s past achievements, including its scholarship schemes, advocacy for Lagos indigenes, and humanitarian services during the #EndSars protest and COVID-19 pandemic.

He said: “If you listened to the sermon of the chief Imam of Lagos, he reiterated one of our achievements which are scholarship and education grants, testifying that he benefited from one of our scholarship schemes.

“Again, we are not just a social club, we are a family club. When the issue of Lagos or any issue that has to do with indigeneship comes to the front burner, we are always at the forefront providing proper perspectives to it through advocacy.

“During the #EndSars protest, we were out there to ensure that our heritage is well preserved. Even during COVID-19, we were always out there donating and providing succor to people. These and many more humanitarian services have been done.

Amodu paid tribute to the founding fathers of the club, who have passed on to the great beyond, for their vision, dedication, and hard work in establishing the club. He acknowledged their efforts in laying a solid foundation for the club’s growth and success.

“We remember our founding fathers, who have gone to the great beyond, for their tireless efforts in building this club. Their legacy lives on, and we are proud to continue their work,” Amodu said.

The 50th-anniversary celebration kicked off with a visit to His Royal Majesty, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, followed by a World Press Conference, Jumaat Prayers, and a Church service. On the 18th of this month, the club will also hold a cultural day to showcase Lagos’ heritage, featuring traditional music, dance, and art. Additionally, on September 20, the club will hold Elders and Founders’ Day to honor its pioneers, a health walk to promote fitness, induction of new members, and a visit to an orphanage to give back to the community; while the grand finale will hold on September 29.

Amodu advised Lagosians to unite and be their brother’s keeper, emphasizing the importance of preserving their heritage and getting involved in governance to realize their dreams for Lagos. He stressed that the club’s commitment to community service and advocacy has made it a beacon of hope for Lagosians.
