Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar has called on politicians to, as a matter of concern, discourage political thuggery, which seems to be overtaking the tolerable political atmosphere in Sokoto state.

The Sultan made the call when Acting Governor, Alhaji Lawali Zayyana paid a courtesy visit on him at his palace on Friday.

According to Abubakar, “Gathering and the use of thugs at political rallies and campaigns should be discouraged. This does not augur well for the wellbeing of this state and the nation at large.

“Government and security agencies should work together to ensure peaceful electioneering.”

While advising politicians to learn from the unfolding happenings in the country, the Sultan added that political leaders should have the fear of God by guarding against violence. “Politicians should learn from the evolving events and fear God. Of all the candidates that are aspiring to govern the state, only one will win. So, if you encourage violence, you will tear Sokoto apart. Campaigns should be conducted in peaceful manner.”

Earlier, the acting governor told Sultan that he was at the palace to seek his prayers and guidance.

Sultan’s take on the use of thugs at electioneering and rallies in Sokoto state is not unconnected to the recent attacks by political thugs against supporters of opposing parties, including Wednesday attempt to raze down a campaign office.
