G’bulous is one of the leading fashion brands in the city of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. In an exclusive interview, Ege Glory Arerosuoghene, the Chief Executive Officer, shares insights into the brand’s aspirations and unveils the potential the Port Harcourt fashion industry holds for the emerging designers.

Tell us about yourself and your brand?

My name is Ege Glory Arerosuoghene. I’m the founder of G’bulous Fashion. Our brand specializes in bespoke fashion, catering to women’s attires ranging from formal to traditional and casual wears, including office attires.

In addition to our clothing line, we offer training programmes, having mentored numerous students over the years. Notably, in September 2023, G’bulous made its debut at the Port Harcourt Fashion Week, showcasing an array of classic English-inspired outfits.

Then, on December 1st, we proudly showcased our exquisite African print designs on the runway at the UK Black and Scot Gala Night. We’re excited to share this craft and its accomplishments in entirety with everyone as we embark on this journey.

How long have you been in this industry?

The brand was established in 2015 and we experienced significant growth and recognition from 2018 through 2024 especially when we graced the runway at the Port Harcourt Fashion Week in 2023.

What’s your motivation?

I have always loved fashion and seeing people look their best drives me.  I believe that looking good have effect on one’s appearance and has the ability to uplift one’s mood and infuses happiness and vitality into your being.

It didn’t stop there, it spurred me into studying Fashion and Design both at National and Higher Diploma levels at the prestigious Delta State Polytechnic resident in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State, Nigeria.

G’bulous brand later moved to the city of Port Harcourt, Nigeria where I further immersed into the fashion scene. Sewing has been my passion since I was thirteen, making fashion and design more than just a business—it’s my calling. I immensely researched on Port Harcourt fashion industry as it is  recognised as one of the top ranking fashion cities in Nigeria.

I did a good number of voluntary services and went through further trainings in the fashion industry to hone my skills while liaising with some top brands in the city, because I really wanted to understand how the fashion industry works, and how I can contribute to its growth and advancement. So far, the Fashion Industry has been challenging and interesting.

How do you rate Port Harcourt Fashion Industry?

The Nigeria Fashion Industry is quite big and accommodating, and offers ample opportunities for established and emerging fashion designers.

Various stakeholders, such as the Port Harcourt Fashion Association, are actively supporting emerging talents. It is a promising sector that is still evolving and hasn’t reached its peak yet. Now is an ideal time for aspiring fashion enthusiasts to dive in before entry barriers becomes challenging.

What are your aspirations for your brand?

I and a significant number of my clients envision it as a global brand. Personally, I aim to establish a prominent presence both locally and internationally. I aspire to collaborate with international brands and cater to a global clientele beyond the local fashion industry.

Do you see fashion becoming a goldmine?

It is possible, I see fashion growing beyond or competing with oil and gas and even technology, but it relies heavily on the innovation and creativity of fashion leaders and emerging designers. In this business, creativity is key, and there are many avenues to explore.

Advice for upcoming designers?

It is pertinent to have zeal and passion for the fashion industry, more importantly, acquire the necessary skills to thrive in the industry. In essence, enthusiasm is not enough, hence, the urge to make a difference, contribute one’s quota to the industry, proficiency in sewing and understanding business principles are keys for long-term success. Marketing skill is equally vital, without it, your creations may remain unnoticed.
