A Jos Upper Area Court on Wednesday sentenced a 30-year old conductor, Loneji Adamu, to three months imprisonment for stealing two vehicle batteries valued at N50,000.

Adamu, who was entrusted with an articulated vehicle by one Shitu Titu, a driver, stole the batteries and sold them to a mechanic, an offence which Prosecutor Gokwat Ibrahim said was contrary to Section 287 of the Penal Code.

The court, however, gave the convict an option of N3,000 fine.

Adamu had pleaded guilty when he was brought before the trial Judge, Malam Mustapha Hassan, and was given a summary trial.

Hassan said that since Adamu had pleaded guilty, the court had no option than to convict him in line with Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Ibrahim had told the court that Adamu committed the offence on December 24, 2011 when Titu left the vehicle in his custody.

The prosecutor further said that the police later discovered that Adamu made away with the batteries and sold them to an auto mechanic now at large.

He tendered the two recovered batteries as exhibits before the court.

The judge warned the convict to be of good behaviour after his jail term, saying that the court would not be lenient with him if he appeared before it again. (NAN)
